A Brief Description

As it is well known, earlier the cancer diagnosis, more efficient its control is. The major kinds of bone cancer include radiation, surgery, chemotherapy, focuses therapy. The primary treatment for bone cancer is the use of surgical procedures. As for any method, biopsy is an unavoidable procedure that should be done. In order to ensure that all the malignant cells are removed, wide excision is mostly performed.

Radiation is mostly performed in the case of a positive margin. A margin is said to be positive when there are malignant cells in the removed tissue edges. Radiation therapy can be proton beam radiation or an intensity modulated radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy is a kind of systemic therapy. In this method, the drugs reach the cancer cells through bloodstream and kill them. They include drugs like cisplatin, doxorubicin, carboplatin, etoposide, methotrexate etc. Multiple medications are often prescribed simultaneously. However, chemo is said to have several side effects like mouth sores, loss of appetite, loss of hair, vomiting and nausea etc. With the advent of new technologies, specific set of drugs have been developed. These classes of drugs are known as targeted therapy drugs. These categories are different from the traditional chemo drugs. Targeted drugs are yielding excellent improvement in areas where chemos have failed. One of the prominent targeted therapy drugs is Imatinib, which is used to effectively treat chordomas.
